Volunteers

One of the strengths of our garden is our volunteers. Each year, more than 150 volunteers provide essential help with the following items: events, garden work, transplanting, displays, the gift shop, the plant sale, the concert series, office work, tours of the gardens.

We are currently seeking volunteers to fill the following positions:

  • Gift Shop and Reception Assistant(s): Greet visitors, answer phones, clean gift shop and create new displays, assist customers in the gift shop. (preferably 4 hours per week – especially Sundays and Mondays during the summer)
  • Leprechaun Run Volunteer Coordinator: Work with Office Manager to recruit and schedule volunteers, provide guidance and assistance on the day of the event (March 14), and set up volunteer break room for event.
  • Plant Sale Volunteer Coordinator: Work with Office Manager to recruit and schedule volunteers, provide guidance and assistance on the day(s) of the event (April 23-25), and set up volunteer break room for event.
  • Luminary Walk Volunteer Coordinator: Work with Office Manager to recruit and schedule volunteers, provide guidance and assistance on the day(s) of the event (November 27-28, December 4-5), and set up volunteer break room for event.
  • Poster Distributor – Hesston: Distribute posters and other promotional materials to business locations around Hesston. (2 hours per event x 12 events per year)
  • Poster Distributor – Newton: Distribute posters and other promotional materials to business locations around Newton. (1-2 hours per event x 12 events per year)
  • Office Assistant(s): Assist office manager with daily office tasks, such as filing, data entry, correspondence with members, and other special projects. (preferably 4 hours per week)
  • Grounds Assistant(s): Assist the grounds manager with maintenance of the grounds. Duties could include weeding, mulching, eradication of invasive species, tree removal, planting, watering, trimming and occasional mowing. (schedule can be self-determined)
  • Rentals Assistant: Close up and secure facilities following rentals, help with set up and take down of chairs and tables for rentals, occasionally assist with cleaning projects. (schedule based on availability and rental schedule)
  • Kitchen Assistant(s): Assist in the kitchen with serving, preparing drinks and washing dishes for various events such as the Winter Lecture Series, Spring Symposium, Leprechaun Run, the Prairie Window Concert Series and the Luminary Walk. (2 to 5 hours per event)

In addition to these positions, we also recruit volunteers to assist on a “per event” basis for the following events:

  • Winter Lecture Series (soup supper and registration)
  • Leprechaun Run
  • FloraKansas Plant Sale
  • Prairie Window Concert Series
  • Summer Soiree
  • Luminary Walk
