FloraKansas Description

One benefit of Arboretum membership is a 10 percent discount on Arboretum plants.

FloraKansas - The Great Plains Plant Bazaar, the largest native plant sale in Kansas, offers hard-to-find native and adaptable plants. Hundreds of varieties of plants are available, many locally grown. Knowledgeable staff and volunteers are on hand to answer questions and give suggestions.

Fall is a great time to plant wildflowers like echinacea. Perennials, trees, and shrubs naturally do 80% or more of their root growth in the late summer and fall.

Staff and volunteers will encourage you to select plants that will develop into a 'permanent' garden, one that will come back year after year and will thrive without constant watering or frequent applications of pesticides and fertilizer. This kind of prairie garden is resilient to wind and drought and will reward you with four seasons of continuous beauty. Butterflies, songbirds, hummingbirds and many beneficial pollinators will share in this innovative and ecologically balanced oasis.

Penstemons do best when planted in the spring and love hot weather.

The second week-end in May is the date of the spring plant sale. As a member of the arboretum, you are invited to the Members Only event giving you first pick and a 10% discount. The Saturday educational programs feature speakers offering design ideas, propagation information and information about where to find wildflowers in their native settings. Artists' works reflecting the beauty of nature are on sale in the gardens and in the gift shop. Tours of the gardens provide visitors ideas for home landscapes and plantings around libraries, hospitals, retirement communities, etc. in their own communities.

The second week-end in September is the date of the fall plant sale. Fall gives you a golden opportunity to jump start a new planting. The roots of the plants use the warm soil to get in an extra season of growth before frost. Come April, you can sit back and watch your well-established plants catch the early spring rains and exhibit lush early foliage. The fall plant sale also includes a Members Only event with the 10% discount.

All proceeds from the plant sales support the mission of the arboretum.
